U of L adds two more NCAA regional qualifiers
The University of Louisville track and field team team added two new NCAA regional qualifiers among the 45 total qualifying marks achieved at yesterday's Cardinal Twilight meet at Cardinal Park.
Sophomore Tarah McKay won the 800-meter run in a school-record 2 minutes, 9.30 seconds. She already was a regional qualifier in the 1,500.
Freshman D'Ana McCarty finished fourth in the hammer throw with a personal-best 180 feet, 5 inches, earning her first regional bid.
Overall, the Cardinals have 27 qualifiers for the Mideast Regional in two weeks.
University of Kentucky junior Chase Madison won the men's discus with a heave of 198-1 in the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Auburn, Ala.
Senior teammate Andy Fryman finished fourth at 186-2, and freshman Colin Boevers was seventh at 179-6.
UK freshman Victoria Dunlap tied for third in the women's high jump at 5-8.75 and was seventh in the javelin at 130-5. Junior Andrea Halasek set a school record in the steeplechase at 10:35.76, and freshman Jennifer Svoboda was fourth in the shot put at 50-2.
Freshman Derrick Locke, who's also a running back on the football team, was fifth in the men's long jump at 24-11.
UK athletes qualifying for today's finals included sophomore Jenna Martin (women's 400-meter dash); seniors Nathan Browning and Justin Harrison (men's 400); junior Mikel Thomas (men's 110 hurdles); senior John Richardson (men's 1,500); and senior Lavera Morris and juniors Jenna and Jessica Ortman (women's 1,500).

Three U of L crews advanced to today's petite finals at the South/Central Regional on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Cardinals' varsity eight crew finished fifth in its semifinal, completing the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 51.35 seconds. The second varsity eight crew also was fifth in its semifinal in 6:57.97, and the varsity four crew was sixth in its semi at 8:02.05.
